Reminiscences

Reed Gwillim Law Jr. remembers: When I was living with my grandparents, I got the measles, and she drove to Forestville for a visit. Her voice sounded very sweet as she read to me.

She had to have electroshock therapy around the time that Steven was born.

As we were growing up in Cortland, she was wary of attempting things that she thought might be too much for her. Once the four of us drove to Ottawa for an overnight vacation. We got a little lost along the way, and she was all for turning back and going home, but the trip went on as planned. When we lived in Montpellier, France, in 1955-56, she spent a lot of time in the American library. She and I had to leave a movie theater during the show because she said there was a masher next to her. One Christmas morning when I was about twelve, she went into the kitchen to cry, and I went to try to comfort her.

Accomplishments

  • She remembers being aboard a train that wrecked during the Great New England Hurricane (September 21, 1938), presumably traveling from Middletown to Wheaton College
