Ralph and Mary Gorrell Grave Site
On September 22, 2002, we (Gwillim, Janice, and Evan Law) visited the graves of Ralph and Mary Gorrell, in the burial ground of Alamance Presbyterian Church near Greensboro, N.C. This is a view of the church, with the Gorrell plot at the lower left.
The Gorrells have three ledger stones placed side by side. Here are their pictures, from left to right:
The inscriptions, as nearly as I can tell, read as follows.
Right marker: In memory of RALPH GORRELL who parted this Life Aprile the 16th A.D. 1816 Aged 81 years Come hither ye who walk around the tombs, Draw nigh and see to what all glory comes Once young and gay the pleasure of our eyes Here deep in dust Ralph gorrell mouldering lies. [Four more verses which I can't entirely make out] DAVID SCOTT sculpt GREENSBORO Center marker: SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF MARY GORRELL, CONSORT OF RALPH GORRELL who was born October 14th, AD 1745 and departed this Life APRIL 25th, 1816 She was beloved in her Life And Lamented At her Death Left marker: In | In memory of | memory of CATHARINE DONNELL | ANN THOM consort of David | consort of Samuel Donnell who de- | Thom who depar- parted this life the | ted this life the 7th of October AD | 22nd of november 1823 in the 50th | 1821 in the 40th year of her age. | year of her age. DAUGHTERS of RALPH and MARY GORRELL Hark from the tombs a doleful sound Mine ears attend the cries Ye living men come view the ground Where you must shortly lie. D. SCOTT, sculpt Greensboro, NC.
Note: the DeWees family history compiled by Martha DeWeese Wilkinson has the spelling Ann Thorn instead of Ann Thom. It's easy to confuse lowercase "rn" with "m," but the uppercase on the stone can't be confused with "RN."
In this picture, Evan is looking at all three markers.
We also stopped at Mount Hope United Church of Christ, a few miles to the east of Alamance Presbyterian Church, where we found some more Gorrell markers. Here is the church, seen from Mount Hope Church Road, and the markers I photographed.
The inscriptions are:
