3 Ames Street
When Reed Gwillim Law Jr. matriculated at MIT, he chose East Campus as his residence because it was convenient to classes and relatively inexpensive. He started sharing a double room. East Campus consisted of two parallel five-story buildings divided into six halls vertically. Its street address was 3 Ames St. The double room was Bemis 112.
After a few months, friendships formed and changed so that an arrangement was reached for Gwil to move into Bemis 104, a single. At the start of his junior year, he moved to the other parallel and Wood 104.
The rooms were simply laid out and furnished. There was a sink in each room, and bathrooms were in common on each hall. Each hall also had a soundproofed telephone cabinet for outside calls; each dorm room had a dorm line telephone for calls on campus.
Most meals were eaten at Walker Memorial, a few steps away, which also offered office facilities and other public areas.
