(Joan Gwillim writes:) After [John's] mother died (he was only 5 years old) his Aunt Bess really stepped in because her brother Harland was quite depressed and not able to function in a fatherly role. [...] My father had wonderful stories about time he spent with her. [Based on the dates we have, John would have been 6 years 5 months and Bessie would have been 26 years old at the time of John's mother's death.]
